The power of God‘s promises

The power of God‘s promises

As a Christian, we need faith not only to accept Jesus Christ as our Savior but also to cling to promises in His Word and to “walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7).

You will find this quote printed on apparel and merchandise that Christians use to spread the gospel. Are you wondering where this phrase came from ? Read on…

The origin of the quote

The phrase “Walk by faith, not by sight” is found in 2 Corinthians 5:7 which reads literally from the Greek text, “for by means of faith we walk, and not by means of sight.”

It means that we live today according to God’s promises, even though we cannot see them, and not according to the temporary, arbitrary things that our eyes often focus on here on earth.

The term “walk” is being used figuratively to mean our manner of life or the way we conduct ourselves on a daily basis.

If a Christian is walking by faith, his daily life is predominantly governed by learned biblical principles, and he/she is being led by the Holy Spirit. Walking by faith also reflects the fact we are to simply trust God in all things that happen in our daily walk, especially with regard to those things we don’t understand. When we learn to trust Him in all things, we can have a deep and abiding peace.

If one is not walking by faith, their daily life is governed or controlled by human or worldly principles and values that are not divine. This is called "walking by sight" in this same passage.

In Psalm 14:1, it says, “The fool says in his heart, there is no God.” Although this passage refers to an unbeliever, Christians (believers) can also act foolishly by following their own worldly views about what is right and wrong rather than walking by faith. When they do, they are said to be walking by sight.

To sum up, “Walk by faith, not by sight” is a positive term used to describe the Christian’s daily life where their thoughts and actions are consistent with biblical values. It’s a life characterized by confidence, assurance, and peace that is God’s goal for you as a mature Christian.
