Loving and respecting oneself
"Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love" - Ephesians 4:2
We are called to love and respect not only ourselves but also those around us, including our romantic partners. In a relationship, it can be easy to focus on the flaws of our significant other and forget to show them love and respect, but Ephesians 4:2 reminds us to "Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love".
When we truly love and respect ourselves, we are able to love and respect our partner in the same way. We recognize our own worth and value, and we understand that our partner is also valuable and worthy of love and respect.
It's important to remember that no one is perfect and everyone makes mistakes, that's why it's important to practice forgiveness. "Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you" - Colossians 3:13.
Another way to show love and respect in a relationship is through communication. "Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ" - Ephesians 4:15. Honesty and open communication help us to understand each other's needs and feelings, and to work through any conflicts that may arise.
Respecting oneself and one's partner is not only done through good words and gestures but also through actions. Showing love in the way you treat your partner, the way you listen to them, and the way you support them, shows that you value them, and you respect them.
A relationship that's based on love and respect is one that is built on a foundation of humility, forgiveness, honesty, and kindness. We should strive to show love and respect to our partner just as we would want them to show us love and respect. Remembering that we are all human, and that no one is perfect, but with God's grace, we can make effort to have a loving and respectful relationship.
Pray with us
Dear God, thank You for the gift of love and relationships. Help us to remember that in order to truly love and respect our partners, we must first learn to love and respect ourselves. Give us the humility and grace to recognize our own worth and value, and to extend that same love and respect to our partners. Remind us that no one is perfect, and help us to forgive and bear with one another in love. Amen.
